Book Workshop: Waheed Hussain’s “Living with the Invisible Hand”

At the time of his untimely death in 2021, Waheed Hussain was in the final stages of completing a book manuscript entitled “Living with the Invisible Hand: Markets, Corporations, and Human Freedom”. In the manuscript, Hussain provides a novel perspective on markets as coordinating mechanisms, articulates a critique of the impersonal forms of dependence characteristic of market processes and, finally, describes a new framework for thinking about economic life. The manuscript, edited by Arthur Ripstein and Nicholas Vrousalis, was published by Oxford University Press in 2023.

With this workshop, we want to provide an in-depth discussion of this important book, and in this way, also seek to pay tribute to the author’s life and work. To discuss the book and Hussain’s legacy, we will bring together an international group of philosophers working on topics related to markets and freedom, who will each present and discuss a chapter. Discussants include Shai Agmon (Oxford), Yara Al Salman (Utrecht), Sandrine Blanc (INSEEC Paris), Lisa Herzog (Groningen), Hannes Kuch (Frankfurt), Barry Maguire (Edinburgh), Martin O’Neill (York), and Tully Rector (Nijmegen).

You can participate as an audience, but familiarity with the book, as well as pre-registration, is required. We will accept participants on a first-come, first-served basis. Please send your expression of interest to j.viehoff@uu.nl

Lunch will be provided to participants, but those registering will need to cover their own dinner expenses should they wish to attend.

Registration deadline: January 30, 2023, 5:00 pm CET
